What story does the nightmarish crate come from?
Oh, I actually didn’t think that it was a direct reference to something in the story… I had assumed that it was just taken from the Whelan cover, which had been used on a Lovecraft book. (I could be wrong, of course - my HPL knowledge is far from encyclopaedic - perhaps there is a story that directly relates.)
As an aside, it’s kind of a shame that so many covers for Lovecraft books bear so little resemblance to the content within… A lot of covers I’ve seen appear to have been put together by someone who was told “it’s a horror novel” but had never actually read it. I used to love Whelan stuff when I was growing up, but even HIS Lovecraft covers don’t really do the material justice. I think part 2 (or B, whatever) is better-executed than part 1, but even then, it looks pretty generic.
Not that HPL’s creations could ever truly be captured using the frustratingly-Euclidean reality our world’s artists are forced to exist in, but still. :)
